One Direction Fever Still Strong In Japan -- Even Waxworks Turn On The Waterworks

One thing we hear often from stars that come to Japan is how enthusiastic the fans (mainly young girls) here react when they see them. It is like the ultimate form of mob psychology, girls who would never dare act that way if they were alone completely lose themselves when they become just a face in the crowd. They will scream, wail, faint, shove their camera phones in the stars’ faces -- this much may not be so uncommon -- but also yell out the celeb’s name with lavishly decorated handmade signs, wear matching attire with kindred spirits, and bombard the stars with gifts upon researching their tastes (a lot of times crafted by themselves).

This highly passionate yet somewhat scary greeting by fans was taken to a whole new level this week. In the last couple of days, numerous events have taken place in Japan to promote the release of One Direction’s first movie "One Direction: This Is Us" on DVD and Blu-ray. Mind you, the 1D boys themselves did not set foot in our country this week, but still the fans went insane to celebrate their manufactured presence.

On February 11, a day before the said video release, Madame Tussauds Tokyo kicked off its One Direction exhibit by premiering it to the press and 40 lucky fans who won tickets to attend the venue (1500 had entered the contest). The prizewinning fans got to hug and kiss the wax sculptures of the 1D members and many were actually overwhelmed to the point they bawled. And, because this event took place three days before Valentine’s Day, many of the fans came with handmade candy to give to their favorite boy (albeit a doll).

In Shibuya, a very crowded and youthful town in Tokyo, February 11 became "1D Celebration Day." One of the programs was to give a "1D goody bag" to anyone who picked up trash off the streets and brought it to a staff member. Despite the freezing weather, thousands took part for a reward that included a disposable pocket warmer, a discount ticket to Madame Tussauds Tokyo, and a serial number to enter a contest for more 1D goods.

Also in Shibuya, 4 buildings surrounding the famous intersection in front of the station displayed scenes from the movie and messages from the 1D boys on their huge outdoor screens. This was an unannounced event that began at 2 p.m. and lasted for 70 seconds for which many pedestrians stopped to take pictures and watch the entire sequence.

One Direction became a phenomenal success in 2013 and went on a world tour following their international breakthrough. This year, they will be back on the road again from April on the "Where We Are Tour" and have already announced performing in US, UK, Europe, Canada and South America. Their last concert that has officially been announced is in October and with only a little less than 3 months left in 2014, Japan can only pray that they will come back here for the last leg of their tour to enjoy some more of the special love by our crazy fans.
